If your natural hair is wavy, coily, or curly, you know that things can get crazy. Literally. You have firsthand experience of how frizzy can be frustrating. Have you been to Google asking, “How can I get rid of frizzy hair?” “How to manage frizzy hair?”
Well, you are not alone. According to Google, the top searched hair terminology is… wait for it, frizz. It’s a universal problem. Every curly-haired girl leaving their hair to fly is trying to fight frizz.
Using IGK Co-Founder Leo Izquierdo’s words, “Frizz is caused by moisture entering the cuticle of the hair and making it swell.” It’s uncontrollable. Making your life miserable by acting opposite to what you want.
You can have different types of frizzy hair. Ever seen some static-like hair protruding from the surface of your locks? That’s surface frizz. Halo frizz gives you a crown-like illusion at the top of your hair. Have you looked in the mirror and thought your hair looked like a pouf ball? Flash news, you got the pouf ball frizz.
With curls, frizz leaves them without definition or unkempt as it happens inside the curls. Your solution, give your curls more hydration and definition to get a uniform look. Humidity, dryness, and damaged hair are your number one enemies.

We’ve compiled and updated this must-have list of our favourite no-frizz tips for curly hair. With these beauty regimen, you’re sure to have a fantastic frizz-free hair day. So let’s get de-frizzing.
1. Get that haircut
Split-ends plus frizz makes your head look like a lion’s mane. Worse if it’s humid. It might be a hairstyle for some but no curly hair products can help at this point. Your curls need to be trimmed every 6-8 weeks. It’s okay to be picky. Get a stylist experienced in curly or textured hair. The bottom line, book that appointment. Pronto.
2. Check your ingredients
Every curly has experienced the wrath of humidity, when the moisture in the hair suddenly makes your hair expand and get big and poofy as the day goes on. Anti-humectant ingredients prevent your hair from absorbing the moisture in the air. Looking for products that contain anti-humectant ingredients is vital.
3. Avoid daily use of shampoo
If you have to shampoo, do it three times a week. Max. Otherwise, co-wash. Meaning, only applying conditioner and rinsing it out.
Never use a shampoo with sulfate. Stick to sulfate-free shampoos. Sulfates are a common ingredient in shampoos as they lather easily. However, they strip natural oils from hair making it dry. On the other hand, glycerin hydrates your hair from the inside out.
Believe me, you don’t want thirsty and dry hair but shiny and nourished.
4. Moisturising conditioner
One of the most powerful frizzy hair products is a moisturising conditioner. Every time you shampoo, condition. It hydrates the cuticles keeping all your strands hydrated. Look for conditioners with glycerin, shea butter, and other hydrating oils.
To deep condition, add some drops of olive or jojoba oil to the conditioner. Treat your hair under heat for five minutes to seal the hydration. Do this once a week in colder months and
Generally, curls are porous and dry. It’s the reason they get frizzy and big when it’s humid. Having a deep condition in your beauty treatment helps keep the frizz out.
5. Rinse with cold water
After you wash and style your hair, giving your hair a final rinse, with cold water, will help to close the hair cuticles & prevents the strands from absorbing water from the environment, reducing the risk of frizz.
6. Use microfibre towels
Hair is delicate. Wringing it with a towel creates friction that leads to breakage and split-ends. When washing, try to squeeze out as much water as you can using your fingers. Use a microfibre towel when your head is flipped over and gently scrunch up. Microfibre towels are super-absorbent and smooth.
Also, you can use a t-shirt if you don’t have a microfibre towel. It’s gentler than a towel.
7. Hair brushing is a no-no
Get rid of a hairbrush and use your fingers, a wide tooth comb or a detangling brush. If you brush your hair while it’s wet, you’ll break it. The worst hair-sin is brushing it when it’s dry.
However, if it’s too tangled, apply conditioner to your hair and brush your hair in small separate sections. Conditioner ensures your hair has enough moisture making it easier to brush. But give it your best shot with your fingers and wide-toothed comb first.
Also, you can use a t-shirt if you don’t have a microfibre towel. It’s gentler than a towel.
8. Air dry / Diffuse
The best way to dry your hair is air-drying. But this isn’t always up for grabs. The next best thing is to use a diffuser when blow-drying. We know it’s a bit challenging to blow-dry your hair without creating frizz. But, it’s an art worth mastering.
Get a diffuser extension and add it to your blow dryer. It reduces the heat and air directly hitting your hair as well as limiting hair movement. The result, smooth hair + less friction = less frizz. Also, diffusing on a cool setting will not only reduce your risk of any heat damage, but you guessed it – less likely to encourage the frizzies to rear their ugly head.

We’ve all been tempted to touch our curls. That diva moment when you pass your fingers through your curls and flip. Stop it!
The more you tousle your curls, the more you attract frizz.
10. Fall in love with hair oils
With wavy, curly, or coiled texture hair, you can use plant oils to lock in hydration. Currently, we have so many products in the market fit for all budgets. From Moroccan argan to coconut, almond, castor, or jojoba oils to keep your hair healthy and revitalized. Remember, a little goes a long way, so don’t over do it.
11. Cut down on the heat styling tools
The heat helps in frying your hair strands. The more hit you use, the more the frizz. Imagine going from 365 degrees to room temperature at once. The hair might look smooth and properly styled but you are doing more harm than good. Frizz comes knocking almost immediately.
Use low heat on your curler, straightening iron, and blow-drier. Yes, it will take longer but in the end, the frizz-free look is worth it. Be patient and take your time.
12. Use a satin pillowcase or bonnet
It’s officially the time to switch to a satin hair bonnet or satin pillowcase. We aren’t in control of our curls while we sleep. So it’s important to protect them while at it. Silk or satin will ensure your hair retains its natural oils.
13. Use a curl gel/cream
Curls are drier by nature hence more prone to frizz. To define your curls, apply curl cream or gel while your hair is still wet and leave it to air dry. You can choose to twirl them around your fingers and shape them as you see fit. If you’re in a hurry, use a diffuser on your curls.
14. Go CGM
Are you following the curly girl method? If you’re following the above and are still experiencing frizz, this could be a factor. The curly girl method otherwise known as CGM is basically the practice of removing shampoo from your hair regime altogether, and using either a natural cleanser to remove build or a conditioner. Removing products that contain, silicones sulfates are the main principles of this well known technique.
