Winter Hair Care: Protect Your Curls During The Colder Months

Winter can be a challenging season for those with curly and natural hair. The cold, dry air, and frequent temperature changes can wreak havoc on your luscious locks, causing dry and frizzy hair. Luckily, our guide will help you protect your curls during the winter months.

From moisture retention to minimising breakage, these tips will ensure your hair remains vibrant and healthy throughout the cold season.

Discover how to maintain your curls and coils with Curly Twirly Girl's winter hair care guide.

1. Hydration is a Must

The cold, dry air of winter can be incredibly dehydrating for your hair. To counter this, invest in a high-quality hydrating shampoo and conditioner. Consider using a deep conditioning treatment once a week to replenish moisture. Opt for products that contain natural oils like jojoba, argan, or coconut oil, as they help lock in moisture and protect your curls. When deep-treating, ensure your curls are saturated with the conditioner, using a wide tooth combs like a wide tooth shower comb to throughly distribute the product.

2. Avoid Over-washing

While it's important to keep your hair clean, overwashing can strip your hair of its natural oils, leaving it dry and brittle. Instead, opt for a gentle, sulfate-free shampoo and extend the time between washes. You can also co-wash (washing with conditioner) to maintain moisture while cleansing your scalp.

3. Seal in Moisture with Oils

Lock in moisture by applying natural oils or hair serums to your hair ends. Argan oil, for instance, helps to prevent breakage and split ends while providing a protective barrier against the elements. Use these oils sparingly to avoid an oily buildup.

4. Protective Styles

During winter, consider protective styles like braids, twists, or buns. These styles not only shield your hair from harsh weather conditions but also reduce the chances of tangles and breakage. Be mindful not to make them too tight, as this can lead to stress on your hair.

5. Use Silk or Satin For Bedtime

Cotton pillowcases can absorb moisture from your hair and cause friction, leading to frizz and breakage. Switch to silk or satin pillowcases or invest in a satin bonnet to reduce this effect and keep your hair smoother and more protected.

6. Avoid Health Styling

Limit the use of heat styling tools during the winter. Excessive heat can further dry out your hair. If you must style with heat, use a heat protectant spray, and keep the temperature on the lower side. It's also a great time to embrace your natural curls and reduce heat-related damage.

Winter doesn't have to mean bad hair days for your curly and natural locks. By following these expert tips, you can protect your hair from the harsh winter elements and ensure it remains healthy and hydrated.
